Anyone who has tried a McKelvie Candle knows they’re as close to perfect little tins of happiness as you can get, and the rest of the range is pretty amazing too.
The McKelvie Candle Company endeavour to make all of their products as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. From their perfumes down to their packaging. Using as much natural raw ingredient as possible, where that ingredient is protected or endangered such as sandalwood, they substitute this by blending other fragrant molecules together to create a sandalwood note – it’s a bit like mixing yellow and blue to make pink, its a little bit of magic!
It’s what they don’t put in that matters!
No Soy Allergens.
As a company McKelvie took the decision not to use any soy waxes in their products. The worlds over use of soy is causing an increasing percentage of the population to develop allergies to it and soy is on the national register of allergens as a result.
The process to convert a bean to a wax also involves the use of nickel which is another allergen so it’s not for McKelvie, or us! McKelvie stick to using a medical and edible grade of wax which is also hypoallergenic and is actually the wax that is used on the back of those little allergy testing strips for that very reason.
Historically, many perfumes used can contain animal secretions and many waxes were made from tallow (animal fats) and some still use them today. McKelvie feel it’s not necessary nowadays. Thankfully advances in technology it is now possible to create a copy of a ‘scent’ by combining other scent molecules together (that magic again), so they don’t need the help of a Beavers vanilla smelling butt! Phew!!!
There are also plenty of other natural waxes readily available. McKelvie choose not to use beeswax in their products as this is what bees use to house their young and store their honey, so let’s not disturb them. Our bees need all the help they can get! Without bees we couldn’t bring you the beautiful McKelvie Candle Company fragrances, we like to think of these busy bees as being little tiny perfumers.
Who knew being kind to the environment could smell soo lovely?!
Being cruelty free is very important to us and McKelvie and we are glad they take great care to make sure all their ingredients are not tested on animals. As a company we will not work with any organisation that uses animal testing.
McKelvie have a long history of being animal lovers with their lovely wee pets, Henry and Tilly the office dogs to Freddo the garden frog, Drew the visiting shrew who steals dog biscuits and Brian the barn snail who comes out to party every night leaving a trail behind him… not forgetting the logo Scrubber, David one of the directors dog when he was a kid… they wouldn’t hurt a fly!
No Palm Oil.
The McKelvie Candle Company don’t use palm oil in any of the products they make, because they share our views and care about the environment and sustainability, so if there is a better alternative, they will always use it! There are also other waxes which do a far better job so it is not needed!
Historically McKelvie have made some soaps which contained a tiny amount of CSPO or RSPO certified sustainable palm oil grown by independent farmers. This does not contribute to deforestation or the loss of wildlife habitats but helps to support the farmers and their families and educate people about the problem with non-sustainable palm.
No gmo… Hell no!
We share The McKelvie Candle Company’s belief that not enough is known about gmo (genetically modified organisms) products yet and their long-term environmental effects, so for now we both steer clear of them until we are told with absolute certainty, they have no detrimental effects on the environment and we won’t grow a third arm because of them… although now we think of it, that might come in handy! hehe
So, now you see that both A Scents Of Scotland and The McKelvie Candle Company both care about what doesn’t go in as much as what does.
